Bowen Disease of the Penis: Diagnosis and Treatment
Definition:
Bowen disease is the carcinoma in situ of the squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. The mucosal variant of Bowen disease is called erythroplasia of Queyrat and occurs on the uncircumcised glans, anus, mouth or vulva (Krogh et al., 2000).
Etiologie:
See next section penile carcinoma.
Pathology:
Full thickness atypia of the keratinocytes with hyperplastic cells without polarity, vacuoles, hyperchromatic nuclei and mitoses at all levels of the epidermis without invasion of the dermis.
Signs and symptoms:
- Bowen disease: is a chronic eczema on keratinized skin, sharply demarcated, easily vulnerable, scaling and psoriasiform [fig. bowen disease].
- Erythroplasia of Queyrat: is a sharply demarcated bright redness of the uncircumcised glans or prepuce (or vulva, anus, mouth) with fine granulation, easily vulnerable. Slow progression in size with itching.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Perform a biopsy of the lesion with circumcision. Additional lesions after circumcision are treated with 5-fluorouracil ointment or laser coagulation.
