Fever of Unknown Origin: Differential Diagnosis
Definition
Fever is defined as having a temperature above the normal range due to an increase in the body's temperature set-point. The upper limit for normal temperature is variable defined (below 38,0 degrees Celsius).
Urologic Infections
Prostatitis, pyelonephritis, renal abscess, epididymitis, urinary tract infection.
Other Infections
Pneumonia, wound infection, infection of medical devices, meningitis, endocarditis, gastroenteritis, adnexitis, tonsillitis, tuberculosis, hepatitis, osteomyelitis, viral infections, malaria.
Tumors
Malignant lymphomas, more rarely GI tumors, renal cell carcinoma or leukemia. Febrile neutropenia due to chemotherapy.
Collagenosis or Vasculitis
Systemic lupus erythematosus, chronic polyarthritis, panarteritis nodosa, giant cell arteritis, acute rheumatic fever.
Other Causes
Drug fever, sarcoidosis, pulmonary embolism, transfusion, hemolytic crisis, hyperthyroidism.
