Oligomeganephronia: Symptoms and Treatment

Definition

Oligomeganephronia is a congenital renal hypoplasia, showing a drastic reduction of the nephron numbers but with compensatory hypertrophy of individual nephrons (Foster, 1994).

Signs and Symptoms of Oligomeganephronia

• Low birth weight
• Hypoosmolar urine, maximum gravity of urine is 1.007–1.012
• Thirst, vomiting, and dehydration
• Proteinuria
• End-stage renal disease around the age of 10 years

Treatment of Oligomeganephronia

• Treatment of fluid and salt loss
• Correction of acidosis
• Limitation of dietary protein (1.5 g/kg per day)
• Dialysis and kidney transplantation in end-stage renal disease
