Oligomeganephronia: Symptoms and Treatment
Definition
Oligomeganephronia is a congenital renal hypoplasia, showing a drastic reduction of the nephron numbers but with compensatory hypertrophy of individual nephrons (Foster, 1994).
Signs and Symptoms of Oligomeganephronia
- Low birth weight
- Hypoosmolar urine, maximum gravity of urine is 1.007–1.012
- Thirst, vomiting, and dehydration
- Proteinuria
- End-stage renal disease around the age of 10 years
Treatment of Oligomeganephronia
- Treatment of fluid and salt loss
- Correction of acidosis
- Limitation of dietary protein (1.5 g/kg per day)
- Dialysis and kidney transplantation in end-stage renal disease
